Governor Ricketts signed the Nebraska Financial Innovation Act into law on May 26, 2021, which became effective on October 1, 2021. The Act authorizes a new charter for digital asset depositories and puts the state of Nebraska on the forefront of financial innovation and regulation of the blockchain/digital asset industry. Cleanup amendments to the Act were adopted by LB 92 (2023); these became effective June 7, 2023. The Department is responsible for enforcing and administering the Act, which includes the drafting of rules, regulations, and other guidance documents for the emerging industry.
