LINCOLN, Neb. – Governor Jim Pillen has proclaimed April as Financial Awareness Month in Nebraska. In conjunction with that proclamation, the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance (NDBF) is launching its “Make Cents Make Sense” initiative to help Nebraskans save more money and fight financial fraud.

The initiative includes a new website,makecentsmakesense.nebraska.gov, to provide trusted, no-cost, and unbiased resources on important topics, including:

  • Tips to prevent financial fraud and actions to take if you’re a victim;
  • How to protect older Nebraskans from fraud;
  • Steps to build an emergency fund or open a savings account;
  • How to use compound growth to enhance your investments; and
  • Saving and investing terms to know.

The “Make Cents Make Sense” site also features links to tools like a budgeting worksheet, savings calculator, mutual fund analyzer, and fraud-prevention resources. New content will be added to the site on a regular basis. In addition, visitors can use the site to report scams.

“There is a lot of power in understanding money – how to protect it, how to save it, and how to spend wisely,” Governor Pillen said. “This initiative provides users with that information so they can make decisions that benefit them and their families.”

NDBF Director Kelly Lammers said: “Financial awareness empowers individuals and families. It is through awareness that ‘Make Cents Make Sense’ will help ensure a brighter financial future for Nebraskans.”

NDBF Deputy Director, Bureau of Securities Claire McHenry stated: “‘Make Cents Make Sense’ is more than just a website – it represents the Department’s ongoing mission to help Nebraskans secure their finances.”
